A state vehicle inspection is a service that examines a vehicle's tires, fluid levels, belts, lights, wipers, battery, hoses, and other components to ensure compliance with safety and emissions regulations. These inspections are required periodically and may be necessary for new vehicles, registration renewals, and title transfers. Regular inspections help maintain vehicle safety and performance, making them essential for both personal and commercial vehicles. Each state has specific inspection requirements, so it's important to have your vehicle inspected according to local regulations.

New Jersey requires a bi-annual vehicle inspection on certain passenger vehicles:
Gasoline and bi-fueled vehicles plated as passenger, not-for-profit, governmental, commuter van, farmer or farm truck models manufactured in or after 1996 with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 8,500 pounds or less, five (5) model years and older, excluding buses.
Gasoline and bi-fueled vehicles plated as passenger, not-for-profit, governmental, commuter van, farmer or farm truck models manufactured in or after 2008 with a GVWR between 8,501 to 14,000 pounds, five (5) model years and older, excluding buses.
Gasoline and bi-fueled vehicles plated as passenger, not-for-profit, governmental, commuter van, farmer or farm truck models manufactured in or after 2014 with a GVWR of 14,001 pounds or greater, five (5) model years and older, excluding buses.
Diesel-powered, passenger motor vehicles plated as passenger, not-for-profit, governmental, commuter van, farmer or farm truck models manufactured in or after 1997 with a GVWR of 8,500 pounds or less, five (5) model years and older, excluding buses.
A vehicle inspection in the state of New Jersey includes a visual emissions system inspection, tailpipe emissions testing, and an on-board diagnostic system scan that determines if a vehicle’s engine is performing within acceptable levels. You will not pass inspection if you have a check engine light illuminated during the inspection.
The main reason for instituting this strict inspection process is to keep vehicles that are heavy polluters off the roads by ensuring emissions systems are in good working order. New vehicles are exempt for five years but must be inspected bi-annually thereafter. Getting your inspection done early is encouraged, but vehicle owners must receive their certification within two months of their renewal date.
To have your vehicle inspected and receive your emissions certification, you’ll need to present some key information at the time of inspection:
Valid driver's license
Valid vehicle registration document
State of New Jersey Insurance Identification Card
Once you complete and pass the emissions test, you will receive an inspection sticker that needs to be affixed to your windshield. If your vehicle fails inspection, the technician will provide you with an Emission Repair Form and vehicle inspection report that can help an emissions repair facility determine which items are causing the vehicle to fail.
